Hear Hear

After failing his hearing test at the hospital three times in a row Raymond's first three weeks of life, we were referred to a specialist. "Chances are," they said, "he just has additional fluid in his ears from the birthing experience. But better safe than sorry."

Today was the appointed day to find out.

Of course when we got there he immediately began crying uncontrollably. So far I'm not very good at swaddling him while still in my lap. A skill I definitely need to learn, as swaddling is the only consistent trick to calming him down. By the time we got back to the special hearing test room the poor boy was exhausted from all his ranting and raving. Since they needed him calm for the test, I lost all shame and swaddled him on the floor just like we do at home. Lucky for me he calmed right down and was a champion for the reminder of the two hours we were there.

At first it didn't look so good. They repeated the test from the hospital. And he failed again. They did a quick test to see if the cause was excess fluid in the ears. No extra fluid.

That's when they pulled out the big guns. They attached little electrodes to his forehead and both ears. There were two doctors--one who was obviously in training--who sat at the computer whispering and conferring. I sad holding the wee one awaiting the results. Although I know he's not deaf (he jumps at loud noises and responds to shhing and singing in his ear), it was a little nerve-racking waiting for the results.

But, dun dun dun, the good news is, his hearing is in normal range (the right ear was more responsive than the left... but they're both in normal range). Now we will just go back in a year to be sure that he's still on track.

Whew! Our little man is a hearer. Sigh of relief.

Oh good! Any kind of concern that requires extra testing can be very stressful. It sounds like you handled it really well. Glad to hear he's doing just fine.

Oh my land, that is so stressful and I feel for you, Carly. Even though you know that everything is 'probably' going to be okay, it's terrible to have to go through that. I'm so glad everything was in the normal range and that you both survived the visit. Now, time for practice lap-swaddling!!! :)

Oh the medical community. They can be such a blessing but are such a source for undue cause and concern at times. I'm so glad everything came out well. Oh, and swaddling on the lap is never easy, so don't worry about it. ;)

Oh, I am so so glad! I have been wondering when they would do more testing. I am glad it all worked out. Sad he was so upset while there. Go you on getting through it all. I love you Carly Jane!

I'm glad everything turned out O.K. This weekend all the Olson girls will be in St. George for a mother/daughter retreat!! I'm heading back with Shannon and Melanie on Monday (7/27) and we were wondering if we could stop by and see you and especially little Raymond. We would be by around 9:30 - 10:00 a.m. Let us know if that would work out for you (I know it's kind of early, but Shannon has to be back that day.) We would love to see you and also have something for the baby too :-)

I'm glad everything's ok. As a mom you worry about every little thing sometimes (at least I do) and hope they are developing as they should. Like I remember how relieved I was when Levi started pointing out colors and to know he wasn't color blind.

Carly the same thing happened with Gabriel. He failed the many tests in the hospital, but passed the test a week later. I am glad your little guy is very healthy and hearing. I love the picture of the two of you!

I know it's been almost two months, but congratulations on your little man, he's adorable! Isn't being a mom great? I love the picture where he's wrapped in a towel after his bath and his lips are all puckered up and his eyes are tightly closed. I love their newborn expressions. I'm sure you've already noticed how quickly they change.

I'm really happy everything is good. I know how it is to not be able to hear completely and at times it is not fun. I'm just glad he's good.
