That Halloween is a weird holiday.
When I was a little girl, it was one of my favorite holidays. Loved it. (What kid doesn't? Honestly). I loved having an October birthday, and I loved the oft-Halloween-themed birthday parties that accompanied. Seriously what is better than costumes and free candy?
But this year I've been really thinking about it, and I decided the whole thing is strange. Downright strange. We celebrate witches and pumpkins and ghosts?? We decorate with skulls and spider webs and creepy candles??
I definitely plan to still celebrate Halloween, don't worry about that! Maybe it's because I'm in TOTAL DENIAL that October is half over already that I can't get into it this year (although I just got some candy corn and I'm definitely getting into that...)
But where does this holiday come from? Really? I honestly don't understand why we celebrate it. And with such enthusiasm. It's weird, I tell you.
Maybe once my kids are older and can get into it more, I'll swing back into full Halloween mode. Have no fear, I plan on making Raymond a killer cute lion costume this year. We certainly are going to try to get into it. And I'll definitely be carving a pumpkin and making some pumpkin muffins. Even if it doesn't happen until November. (Is October really half over? Really?)
But is it just me, or is the whole premise of this holiday just a little strange? Be honest.

Halloween has never been my favorite holiday, but I remember loving trick or treating as a kid. And I love all the Fall-ness that accompanies it.
I just got my kids their Halloween costumes yesterday and they are SO excited. They couldn't believe it was still 2 weeks away. I love going to the pumpkin patch and picking pumpkins. I love putting donuts on our cat's (decoration) tail and eating them when we carve said pumpkins. I still love the free candy too. Strange holiday, but it sure is fun!
It is weird - but a holiday based on customes and candy is my kind of holiday. Maybe thats just me though :) Happy Birthday a few days late!!! I hope it was a good one!
I don't like the scary aspect of Halloween. I try to avoid the witches, goblins, etc. But I think you can dress up in fun, uplifting costumes and do fun, uplifting activities like trunk or treats and fall carnivals. It's like Christmas and every other holiday. What do you focus on?
I seriously love Halloween. And to be honest when I go to a house (like I did just a few days ago) that was decorated with spiders and spider webs and creepy things I loved it. I said "My boys would LOVE your house" Boys just like those things. They think they are cool. And not all creepy like we do. After 7 years of boys I am kind of just finding creepy grose things in a different light I guess. We just have fun with the idea that you get to pick a fun costume and candy and pumpkins. I love the bright colors. The fun decorations. It all. I think it is all how you talk about it. Is it is "fun" holiday or a "creepy" holiday. I say fun. And that is what my boys take from it. I sure am glad my boys have another opportunity to you use their imaginations. I love it :) Spiders and all.
I think basically, people want a reason to celebrate! So take the origins of the holiday which was the "all hallows eve" and take the semi religious parts out of it(as we always do with holidays) and it becomes a celebration of fun and fantasy - somewhat morbid however. I guess I don't put the scary parts into Halloween - I think of fun, cute, inventive costumes, making people smile, sharing treats. I just love it.
