Monologue Mode

One of the side effects of living by myself is that I, eh hem, on occasion, find myself muttering, or mumbling, or well, talking to myself. Now don't laugh. There really is nothing wrong with people who talk to themselves. I come from a long line of women who talk to themselves. And while I did, maybe, laugh about it as a young child wondering if my mom was talking to me or someone else, I have come to see it as quite helpful and even practical. We just have so much going on in our heads that we can't process it all up there alone. My fish was supposed to take some of the edge off of this for me, so I could use the excuse, "I was talking to my fish..." So far that hasn't worked too much. I am sure Bella is bored to death and swimming in circles while I jabber away in the other room and leave her out of all the fun.

Well, talking to yourself isn't so bad when you are alone. But unfortunately, I find myself carrying on a monologue in the most unexpected places. Usually when I am walking home and processing the day. But the worst is the high school bathroom. I can't tell you how many times I suddenly realize I am talking aloud and frantically check the other stalls to see if they are empty. I actually have started walking across the building to the faculty bathroom just so a wide-eyed student doesn't emerge from a neighboring stall wondering if her English teacher is off her rocker. It happens that much.

And I have begun making off hand comments about people who talk to themselves being normal to some of my classes, knowing full well that it is only a matter of time that one of them will walk in on me in the middle of a heated debate with my other half. I want them to be prepared for it. (And I really was starting to get offended at how crazy they choked Hamlet up to be simply because of the endless monologues. Come one, there are lots of reasons you might come up with to charge the poor guy with lunacy, but the mere fact that he talks alone, on stage, a lot, is not one of them.)

So, I really want to know: how many of you have found yourself in monologue mode? Come on now, fess up. I spilled my guts for you here in the blogosphere. Only on occasion? Or more often than you pretend?

You really are so funny! Thanks for making me smile and laugh. I would have to say that I have done it from time to time. I am sure (especially with our background) it will become more often, but for now I seem to carry just too many conversations on in my head. Maybe it would be smarter for me to do it outloud more often. I actually think it would help me! Smiles to you red lovin sister!

Oh my Carly, this is so funny! Not funny in a bad way, but in a laugh out loud sort of way, because I know where this is coming from (Yes our mother - and probably her mother too - Love you mom!!). I have to admit that I don't really talk to my self out loud, but sometimes I do answer my thoughts out loud. Does that count? You have to FOR SURE let us know if you get caught one of these days. You are the greatest!!

i'll talk to myself at times when i am alone but i couldn't ever imagine it getting to the point where i am actually in public talking to myself and not realizing it. if it makes you feel any better my internal dialogue never shuts up. sometimes i'll think someone is talking to themselves when they really have one of those cell phone headsets on...i still haven't gotten used to that whole thing.

I couldn't agree more, mamacita! Thanks for passing the torch along to me --both the brains and the talking! Love you :).

How come Mom only comments on your blog? I love that she did though. I think it great we come from a line of people that talk to themselves. I have never thought it odd to be honest. (Funny sometimes, but not odd. :))

my mom talks to herself and apparently I do too... I never noticed it but Melanie was always quick to point it out. I always talk to myself when I get ready in the morning... I really hope Erissa doesnt hear and/or notice. :)

I don't know that I have monologues, necessarily, but I replay conversations or talk through how I think certain conversations will go quite often. I try to keep them in my head but sometimes my facial expressions will come out or I'll start mouthing what I'm saying. Like, Jules, this happens most often in front of a mirror. I don't spend quite as much time there as I used too, but old habits die hard.

Oh yes. The conversation review/primer, I definitely do that. Most of my talking aloud is processing--figuring out how something should go or did go. Us Snowballs are all like! Does Grandma do this? Does anyone know?

Tasha: I don't know!!

Hey, Carly Jane, it's Bethany from freshman year... long time!
I TOTALLY talk to myself, my hubbie laughs at me all the time for it. I use my baby as an excuse for it. It's good for her to hear words, right?

I confess, I talk to myself when I am in the car all the time! Usually there is someone around to hear me, so I can't really talk to myself, but when I am alone I love talking to myself. Its nice to air my feeling out with no repercussions. Usually I talk to myself when I am mad, telling the other person what I really think of them. A few times I have gotten so emotional about something I was make believing that my neighbor who happened to come outside while I was right in the middle of it, knocked on my car window to see why I was crying and if I was ok. Talk about embarrassing!
